Safeguarding our elections

This letter to the editor was published in the Colorado Springs Gazette on 11 July 2025.

I urge our community to rally behind Tina Peters, the Mesa County clerk and Gold Star Mom, as she faces a bond hearing on July 22 in Denver. Peters is serving a 9-year prison sentence for performing her duties – specifically, taking backup copies of election records, as required by law, and retaining them for 25 months after an election. Rather than being a criminal, Peters is a hero whose actions have shed light on significant issues regarding election integrity.

Her efforts revealed that election data was being overwritten by the secretary of state through the “Trusted Build” update of election equipment. Instead of recognizing her as a whistleblower, the secretary of state chose to prosecute her.

President Donald Trump and his Department of Justice are actively working to secure Peters’ release on bond while she awaits her appeal. Her trial raised serious concerns about fairness, with impartiality lacking from the judge, who denied her the chance to defend herself adequately. Disturbingly, part of her lengthy sentence stems from “leaking” a partially redacted and obsolete password, while the secretary of state leaked over 600 complete and active passwords related to Colorado election equipment without facing consequences.

Peters’ work has proven that databases were modified during an election by an individual acting remotely and not under her supervision.
